Intervention at all stages of life to enhance human capacity
BJS has been focusing with deep thought to the National Issues. Ground level connect and personal experience of the founder has helped him to design and develop appropriate solutions for deal on with such National issues. These solutions were piloted, tweaked and deployed by him through BJS and first tested in the community for success and impact on beneficiaries and then rolled over nationally by systematic state wise scaling up.
There are many stages in a persons lifetime. All these stages have their own unique challenges. Our Founder has made an attempt to mitigate the risk of failure in subsequent years, by providing appropriate training in the formative years, thus addressing the core of the issues involved. This led to development of programmes like Smart Girl and Young MBA addressing children, Business development and Minority Affairs addressing Youth, Matrimony meets addressing youth of marriageable age and Happy Family Happy home addressing newly married couples.

BJS’ Smart Girl Program (Empowerment of Girls)
BJS’ Smart Girl program, formerly known as EOG (Empowerment of Girl) is a unique endeavour that seeks to address issues and concerns related to the emotional development of adolescent girls in the age group of 13-21 years. Since 2008, more than 6 lakh girls studying in government schools/colleges have been empowered through the Smart Girl program.
The underlying assumption to this program is that girls between the age of 14-18 years are emotionally vulnerable and denied equal opportunities for development as compared to boys in a similar age group. Addressing this gender gap will lead to overall development in girls thereby increasing their capacities to make decisions and control over their own lives. The prevailing social environment and increasing reports of violence (physical and verbal) against girls also necessitates the implementation of the Smart Girls program.
The central focus of the Smart Girl program is the mental, emotional and social empowerment of adolescents girls and young women with skills, attitudes and abilities that support them in making the right choices and decisions to live a dignified life. It aims to help them to become more resilient in the face of crisis and in the rebuilding of their societies.
As of July 2021, with the help of 546 master trainers and 7,048 trainers, 10,825 workshops have been conducted to empower 6,15,448 adolescent girls and young women in government schools/colleges.
Smart Girl Program Objectives
1.To significantly enhance self-awareness in girls that directly and indirectly improve their social status
2.To significantly enhance self-awareness in girls that directly and indirectly improve their social status
3.To increase knowledge about maintaining self-esteem in girls and young women
4.To instil confidence to face adversities and to know the practical tips for self-defence
5.To generate ability in girls for balancing choices and making life decisions rationally
6.To facilitate positive beliefs in girls about right friendship and handling temptations
7.To sensitize parents for their adolescent children’s developmental and emotional needs
8.To enhance systems and institutional capabilities for sustained improvement in the development of girls

Why there is a need for the Smart Girl program?
Adolescence is a vulnerable period in an individual’s life. It is essential to understand the factors that influence the adolescent social, psychological and physiological development for planning effective social service delivery systems to help adolescents survive the many risks that threaten their wellbeing.
Of the 1.2 billion adolescents aged 10 to 19 years worldwide, 243 Million (about 20%) live in India. Out of which, nearly 113 million are adolescent girls. Yet, in India, there are limited social service delivery systems for adolescent social, psychological and physiological development.
In today’s context, girls have better life prospects than previous generations in many ways. Prosperity and nutrition are improving, child marriage and teenage pregnancy is decreasing and female educational attainment and participation in the workforce are on the rise. However, these advancements are far from universal and poor girls are often left behind and their rights undermined.
In addition to the social forces against them, girls continue to face high levels of gender-based violence, unwanted pregnancies and unsafe deliveries. One in four girls is getting married before attaining 18 years of age and one in five adolescent girls aged 15-19 years is giving birth. Despite these challenges, many girls manage to play a critical role in their homes and communities, even in crises. They are often the first responders who care for their families and establish networks that produce the social capital and resilient communities to survive.
Protecting and promoting their rights, health and wellbeing is, therefore, an essential element of crisis preparedness, effective response and recovery. Empowerment is a process of ongoing change through which girls expand their aspirations, strengthen their voice and exercise choice.
Knowledge and skills are fundamental to girls ability to make informed choices and effectively exercise their rights in the empowerment process. A large body of evidence shows a correlation between girls education and a range of health and development outcomes, including delays in marriage, reduced risk of HIV infection and increased employment and economic growth. In addition to formal education, skill education, counselling and mentorship can be important avenues for the girls to gain knowledge and skills that enable girl empowerment.
Smart Girl Program Key Benefits
- The program helps in the capacity building of young girls of age 13 to 21 years to face the realities of the world.
- By imparting sufficient knowledge and skill in an activity-based friendly manner, the program makes the girls aware of their own strengths and their interaction with the environment.
- It helps them build their confidence to handle incidents and eventualities of life on their own.
- The program brings teachers, students and parents on a single platform to resolve common and serious concerns.
- The program also closely involves the district government authorities to build ownership and commitment to the cause of reducing the gender gap in the development of girls with a focus on building their capacities.
Smart Girl Program Content Modules
The program has six educational modules aimed towards empowerment of girls:
1. Self-Awareness: This module focuses on exercises that make the girls realise their strengths and weaknesses. It then helps them improve the strengths and control or reduce the weaknesses. This also guides them on how to bring about a positive change in their personality by self-questioning the social, physical and emotional aspects and critical observation of their roles, experiences and events in their daily life.
2. Communication and Relationships: This module guides the girls on good communication skills and maintaining healthy relationships. Through activities, the girls get to understand the causes of differences in opinion and their value in arriving at well-balanced decisions.
3. Menstruation and Hygiene: It focuses on physical aspects of their body, menstruation, hygiene, and nutrition. Topics, which all parents would like their children to know, but are not comfortable discussing at home are covered in detail and with scientific explanation. Healthy practices regarding menstruation are shared. This is being supplemented with health and nutrition knowledge.
5. Choices and Decisions: This module develops their ability to make the right choices among the various options. The girls develop an understanding that with the freedom to make a choice comes great responsibility and equips them to conduct themselves responsibly. Elements like time management, career planning, social media and technology and their impact on our lives is a part of this session.
6. Friendships and Temptations: This informs them of the importance of friends in one’s life and how to choose friends particularly close friends. There is no need to hide good friendships from parents. It educates the girls on the temptations arising from friendship with boys, risks involved in internet surfing, Facebook uploads and social media interaction and alerts them on the best practices. Important aspects like differences between a good touch and bad touch, etc. are also covered.
Smart Girl Program Delivery Model for Govt. Schools
- The whole program is run under the ownership of the Chief Education Officer (CEO) of the district and is supported fully by District Education Officers (DEO) and Block Education Officers (BEO). These officers play a critical role in planning, organising the training and execution, including observations.
- BJS has trained Master trainers who are well versed in the program content as well as program delivery in few languages.
- Experienced teachers are selected from government schools and are designated as master trainers. They are trained by BJS master trainers in a 7-day engagement.
- These Master trainers subsequently train the Government school teachers who in turn conduct the Smart Girl Workshops for girls in batches of 50 girls.
Program Impact Assessment Outcomes
During the program design and development stage, a pilot run of the program was conducted. The program was evaluated on an iterative basis, using scientific and statistical tools at baseline and end-line stages to assess the delivery of the content and achieving the desired outcomes.
The girls’ empowerment program was approved after these parameters were achieved satisfactorily. BJS carried out a detailed impact assessment of the Smart Girl Program when it was rolled out in the Government schools. This was done by conducting a baseline assessment by recording feedback from the girls and then conducting the end line assessment in the same manner. The results were very encouraging.
This positive impact is also complemented by feedback from principals, teachers and parents. BJS, an NGO working for women empowerment, received numerous letters, videos from them stating that the program makes a great positive impact on young minds. Some of these videos are shared in the video section on this page.
A notable change observed in the girls was that they started trusting their parents and teachers and shared their difficulties in complete confidence. This led to many complex issues surfacing up quickly and getting resolved, saving the embarrassment of the adolescent girls. Many parents and teachers have reported improvement in communication and relationship with the girls.
As a tangible outcome, there were many threats and risks which were averted, in complete secrecy, resulting in the confidence of the girls in the family structure and societal support. The success of the program was so high that the school administration and CEO from the five districts of Maharashtra on their own asked for refresher training of the master trainers and teachers in the year 2019-20 (school session).

Smart Girl Program History
Smart Girl is a simple initiative that was rolled out initially on a pilot basis to evolve the design for the benefit of the girls through community network but it has now grown and expanded its scope and reach to cover all school-going girls in 8th-12th std. Over a period of time, the program has also been renamed as Smart Girl program from EOG (Empowerment of Girls) to reflect the change in the outlook of girls who are modern and liberal in thought.
The underlying assumption to this program is that girls between the age of 13-21 years are emotionally vulnerable and denied equal opportunities for development as compared to boys in a similar age group. Addressing this gender gap will lead to overall development in girls thereby increasing their capacities to make decisions and control over their own lives. The prevailing social environment and increasing reports of violence (physical and verbal) against girls also necessitates the implementation of the Smart Girls program as widely as possible.
Smart Girl program directly attempts to achieve Goal 5 of Sustainable Development Goals, of Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering Women and Girls. Since 2008, more than 7 lakh girls have been empowered through the Smart Girl program.

BJS’ Jain Matrimony: Program History
Since 1986, BJS is providing prospective Jain brides and bridegrooms with a unique opportunity for selecting the right life partner. Jain Matrimony Meet is a one-day event providing a wider platform for the selection of Jain Matrimony Brides and Jain Matrimony Grooms to find a suitable life partner.
In the present modern scenario, even the parents do not have sufficient time for their children. Due to globalization, higher education and changing lifestyle changes are evident in the attitude of Jain youth towards marriage. Jain families are now open to the idea of youngsters choosing the life partner of their choice. However, Jain youth in their single-minded pursuit of a career find less time to locate a partner of their choice. There is a need for more sophisticated Jain Matrimonial Services.
Though the means of communication have increased manifold leading to, parents connecting with each other easily to exchange data. but this has not resulted in quick decision making. On the contrary increased expectation and choices has made the task more difficult.
Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana’s Jain Matrimonial Meets provides a solution to many of these problems. It blends in it all the traditional advantages, such as authenticity and trust, a larger community helpline and a readymade database that is checked and authenticated. BJS Jain Matrimony provides a readymade platform for prospective Jain Matrimony Brides and Jain Matrimony Grooms to find their life partners.

Starting these camps in 1990, BJS has so far restored smiles on the faces of over 300,000 persons comprising children, youth and old from different parts of India by operating on them and giving them a normal physical look to lead a normal life overcoming physical deformity and social stigma.
Uncovering the Social Stigma
Every day there are about 72,000 births in India. Surveys show that in every 962 babies that are born in India, one is born with a deformity. Children born with cleft lip, squint eyes or facial scars form a high percentage of total birth deformities. The most prevalent method to treat such deformities is to undergo plastic surgery or corrective surgery. Considering these statistics, one would think that there are hundreds of plastic surgeries being performed in India. That, sadly, is not the case.
In India, an infant born with a cleft lip or other facial deformities is considered a curse to the family. Many families, especially the underprivileged classes, have to live as outcasts and suffer social stigma. The primary reason why people do not get treated despite harbouring a wish to do so is the cost of such surgeries, which is well beyond the reach of the economically weaker section of society. The people who are worst hit are those living in the rural areas, who neither have the money for such expensive surgeries nor is there the required infrastructure for such surgeries. Deformities like cleft lip, facial scars or squint eyes is a mental agony for girls of marriageable age.
Moreover, only a few medical students in India opt for plastic surgery as a career in medicine, leading to a dearth of good plastic surgeons in the country. To compound the complexity of the problem, there is a lack of appropriate awareness mechanisms at the level of the individual as well as at the level of the prevailing health care system. Especially in rural areas, people lack awareness that these deformities can be cured through plastic procedures and people can live a normal life.
Free Plastic Surgery Camps: An Initiative by BJS
BJS’ free plastic surgery camps commenced in the year 1990 as a result of the visionary thinking and inspiring social commitment of Shri Shantilal Muttha in visualizing this problem and its adverse impact on a large social segment.
BJS launched this initiative with the help, association & participation of late Padmashree Dr. Sharad Kumar Dikshit, a world-renowned plastic surgeon based in the USA who visited India every year and carried out the surgeries along with his associate doctors who travelled with him. Dr. Dikshit passed away in 2011, but his team of doctors resolved to carry on with exemplary participation & contribution every year.
The objective of its free plastic surgery program is to support individuals to overcome congenital deformities and related social stigma and help them live a life of dignity and confidence. The objective relates to addressing the social stigma faced by a large number of persons who are born with the various types of ingrained physical, facial and ophthalmic disorders by arranging medical and infrastructure support through camps.
On average, BJS’ medical camps report around 800 medical checkups and about 500 surgeries per camp, a unique activity in itself. BJS also arranges for preliminary tests that are required before the medical surgeries, and post-operation assistance with free medicine etc.
The free plastic surgery camps continue to be organized by BJS every year with the help & dedication of doctors. Starting with 2-4 camps in a year, the number of such camps have gradually increased to double-digit figures as high as 24 such camps in a year.
What are the Congenital Facial Deformities in Children?
Cleft lip and Cleft palate
Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis) is a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development before birth. A cleft lip is formed in the top of the lip as either a small gap or an indentation in the lip or it continues into the nose.
A cleft palate is a condition in which the two plates of the skull that form the roof of the mouth are not completely joined. Palate cleft can occur as a cleft in the soft and hard palate, possibly including a gap in the jaw or as a ‘hole’ in the roof of the mouth. Infants with these deformities are unable to suckle milk. The food comes out through the nose due to the absence of the palate. Cleft palate occurs in about one in 700 live births worldwide.
Squint
Squint is a misalignment of the two eyes so that both eyes are not looking in the same direction. A child who has developed a squint does not use the affected eye to see the object. The consequences are harmful to eyes and can lead to visual loss.
Facial scars
Facial scars in children often act as the source of low self-esteem. It has the potential to bring about negative impacts on their social life, especially for a girl.BJS has been organizing free Plastic Surgery Camps since the year 1993. So far about 3 Lakh surgeries have been performed on affected children and they are now leading a respectful life.
BJS acknowledges the immense contribution made by the donors, doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and volunteers in this noble cause which is now taking a shape of a movement.

Bharatiya Jain Sangathana (BJS) is working as a catalyst in building an individual’s skills and knowledge thereby creating a greater capacity towards entrepreneurial success. The main aim is to reach various target groups and provide value added services to build their capacity to understand the latest developments in enterprise building strategies by providing Business Development workshops.
Program History
Traditional family businesses, particularly in rural areas, pass the baton from father to son. The growth in business is organic in nature and customers remain largely same and local. This worked well so far.
In the current scenario, these family businesses are slowly shutting down due to onslaught of modern method of doing business by use of Social Media and Technology along with improved mobile phone and road connectivity. There is a migration of educated youth from villages and small towns to cities and metros looking for lucrative jobs. Thus a traditionally business community is slowly turning into a Service community and owners are becoming employees.
To arrest this change, BJS decided to develop Business Development Awareness programs to provide awareness of the change in the external business environment and how it is affecting the traditional businesses.
It provides the tools to the youth and encourages them for entrepreneurship to enable them to succeed in their traditional businesses.
BJS also holds National Business Conclave to once in two years to delebrate upon the emerging threats and discuss possible solution themes to mitigate the risks. These inputs are used to modify and improve the Business Development Programs.

- Young and bright start up entrepreneurs

These tours also include visits to business houses, corporate headquarters and business schools such as IIMs and ISB. Till now many such exposure tours have been conducted benefitting hundreds of participants.
This tour program is primarily conceptualized for the youngsters with a family business background who could not avail the learning opportunity at the premier management institutes. These youngsters with their specific family background possess a strong business acumen. Hence they have potential to acquire business entrepreneurial learning for transcending the boundaries of traditional family businesses or that of the traditional business and practices. These youngsters also include those who have opted for employment in spite of a strong conducive family background for business and entrepreneurship. The age group is 20-40 years with a mixed educational background, years of experience and business/professional domains.

Young MBA Program allows kids to discover themselves. In today’s world, where kids are only known to spend money , the workshop teaches them to earn money. It further teaches them the VALUE FOR MONEY, which is also the ultimate goal of program to inculcate success habits in children & groom them into an ENTREPRENEUR.
BJS believes that kids need to experiment and experience entrepreneurialism in their formative years and learn from their mistakes to avoid costly mistakes later in life. BJS, therefore, invites all the parents having children of age 10-15 years to grab this unique opportunity and enroll their kids for this Workshop and see the change themselves.

Social Development Strategy
BJS strategizes to elevate personal issues / family problems from the individual domain to a social platform. There is a conscious effort to gear up community activities to address social issues and instead of making these activities event oriented, create a mass movement from these activities. BJS through its decentralized network of volunteers possessing a strong sense of ownership and with a judicious mix of “professionalism” and “activism” gathers input for identifying issues and concerns, devising suitable solutions, rolling them out as pilot at the wide-spread grass root level, and gathering feedback for refinement of solutions and scaling up implementation for wider society. BJS focuses on creating programs at various levels so as to cover entire family through different interventions providing vital social, educational and career inputs at critical milestones in life.
Social Development Reach
BJS social programs are research based, conducted by experts and implemented in collaboration with local BJS office bearers. Most of the programs are technology based. The programs are widely publicized & promoted to ensure maximum possible participation, and wide-spread benefits to be reaped from these programs. Programs are developed to fulfill the need of the individual, the family, & the society at large. Each of the programs is designed for & focused on target participant group who can derive maximum gain out of these. Every activity has its own eligibility criteria for participation.
